Recording of Shamus O'Brien featuring The Orchestra of Scottish Opera shortlisted for the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2024

Congratulations to Retrospect Opera, whose recording of C.V. Stanford’s Shamus O’Brien, featuring The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, has been shortlisted in the opera category of the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2024.

Conducted by David Parry, this first full recording of Stanford’s 1895 romantic comic opera,  which is set in the Cork mountains during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, took place early last year in Glasgow, and was released this March. It features a cast including Brendan Collins as Shamus and Gemma Ni Bhriain as Nora.

Gramophone hails this recording as a ‘jewel’ and ‘a magnificent piece of advocacy for an inspired and wonderfully enjoyable opera’, 'that makes you sit up and reappraise everything you thought you knew about the composer.’

The shortlist will be further reduced to three albums per category in the October issue of Gramophone, and the winners revealed at the Gramophone Classical Music Awards ceremony.
