New Rotterdam Wharf

Scottish Opera to establish new headquarters at New Rotterdam Wharf.

In December 2023, Scottish Opera devised a proposal, in consultation with Ryden, for the redevelopment of Scottish Opera Production Studios site at 40 Edington Street, Glasgow G4 9RD.

In October 2024, Glasgow City Council’s Planning Applications Committee approved Scottish Opera’s application.

The design, which has been developed by Page\Park Architects, is for a thriving, mixed-use development on a site adjacent to the Glasgow branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal, which has laid derelict since the 1980s.

Known locally as New Rotterdam Wharf, Scottish Opera’s new headquarters will sit at the heart of the new proposal and will consist of the following:

  • Mixed-use development to provide music rehearsal and performance spaces, a film and recording studio, general industrial, office and production spaces, and purpose built student accommodation;

  • Residential accommodation;

  • Retail and professional services, food and drink uses, non-residential institutions uses, assembly and leisure, with demolition, associated landscaping, public realm, access and infrastructure.

Location

The New Rotterdam Wharf site is located immediately to the north of Glasgow city centre, next to the Scottish Opera Production Studios.

Adjacent to the Forth and Clyde Canal in the Port Dundas area of the city, the site lies to the west of the historic Speirs Wharf, a successful redevelopment of historic warehouses into a mixed use development.
