Services for Visually Impaired Patrons

To enable blind and Visually Impaired Patrons to enjoy our productions, we provide a range of services including Audio Described performances, Touch Tours, and information about each opera on tape, in large format print, and Braille.

Tickets for Audio Described performances and Touch Tours must be booked two weeks in advance through the Box Office at your chosen venue so that we can send out supporting information at least one week in advance.

Guide dogs are welcome.

To be included on our free mailing list or to receive our season brochure on tape please contact Iona Jack on 0141 248 4567 or iona.jack@scottishopera.org.uk

Audio Described performances

Mention opera and most people think of singing and music. But these are only part of the overall experience. What about scenery, costumes lighting, direction and choreography? Audio Description aims to help Visually Impaired Patrons enjoy the opera experience with live commentary designed to tell the listener of the major moves and events in the performance without compromising the music. Headsets are provided by the theatre.

Please note that the Audio Description starts with an introduction 15 minutes prior to the performance start time.

Touch Tours

Prior to all Audio Described performances there is a Touch Tour of the set, costumes and props on the stage. Touch Tours start 1 hour and 15 minutes before the start of the perfomance.

Why not become a volunteer?

The Scottish Opera Audio Description service is provided entirely by volunteers. The team are always keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in joining them and learning more about Audio Description. If you would like more information about volunteering as a Scottish Opera Audio Describer, please contact audiodescriber@scottishopera.org.uk
